| Q) How do I get rid of the smell in my plastic shaker? A) This is not really a nutrition/supplement question but I have the solution. I tried using tea leaves, lemon juice etc. Finally I discovered a method that removes the smell completely. Filled the shaker with boiling water, and leave the drinking lid open for overnight. I do that once and the next day the smell is all gone. On the next day poar away all the water and leave the shaker to be completely dry inside. The smell should be totally gone. Q) I read that maltodextrin is really bad and I should throw away any of my supplements containing it. A) Before you throw them away, read the following carefully, cos some of them may be fine and even beneficial. Maltodextrin (malto) in supplement can be bad if you consumed high amount by themselves. As long as they are consumed with significant amount of protein (something like 1:2 ratio), their rate of raising blood sugar level will be moderated to a relatively lower level. One of malto's strong point is that they are relatively cost effective (other more fancy carbo ingredients do cost about twice as much and their higher price tag may not be justifiable). Secondly malto induce insulin release that is necessary to drive protein, amino acids, Creatine and many other nutrients you may or may not know about into the muscle cells. Third, malto are relatively neutral in taste and good in mixability, that is they do not affect this two properties in the final product. All these properties made malto a popular ingredient in bodybuilding supplements. Basically, I really do not think malto is all that a villian that it is portrayed to be. In fact when properly incorporated, malto can be a very cost effective and a rather good supplement ingredient. Q) How do I get rid of water retention? A) Avoid salt-laden food stuff. Increase natural fruits and veggies intake, the potassium will flush out excess water and without the unnecessary sodium that cause excessive water retention. Train as heavy as possible and add interval high intensity sessions like skipping rope or running to your routine. Reduce cereal and grain products so that your carbo intake will dropped to 200-300g daily and maintain a high protein intake. Fat-wise restrict to not more than 50g per day and add Omega 3 and green tea supplement to your diet. Some caffeine can increase the expel of water from the body further. In about 2 weeks to 4 weeks time you will be ready. Remember to make your skin look darker as that will increase the ripped look. Q) What do you think of soy protein in supplements? A) I believe it should not be used too heavily in a protein supplement because of its estrogenic effect and its amino acid profile is not the most ideal for muscle building. Q) Which is the better fish oil formula? EPA or DHA or both? I am very confused! A) For most people I will just recommend take DHA. In the human body, DHA can be converted to EPA if needed but it is hard to convert EPA to DHA. On the other hand, for people with joint inflammation or who is looking for protection against heart disease, EPA may be valuable in their supplementation program. For such case, I recommend EPA to DHA in a 2:1 ratio, taking up to not more than 2g of EPA per day. Q) Aside from taking Propecia, is there any other way I can combat hair loss? A) Aside from reducing DHT (Dihydro-testosterone) from circulating in the blood. For those who are new to this, DHT is a version of testosterone that cause the hair follicles to shrink and shrink with each cycle till they disappear forever. Unfortunately for some men, their hair follicles are more sensitive to DHT than other men. For them, they tend to have more hair thinning problems that are linked to DHT. For reducing circulating DHT, the equation is simple and clear, just see a doctor and get finasteride (Propecia) prescribed. Personally, I see and believe in a link between blood circulation and good hair growth. An easy way to improve blood circulation is by regular aerobics session. Diet-wise one should also reduce sodium intake. One should also engaged in relaxing themselves with relaxation techniques like Yoga etc. Being relax increased parasympathetic signals in the body that dilate blood vessels for better blood circulations. I have many clients who have experienced reduction in oiliness in the scalp and dandruff following my advice. Another thing is washing their hair at least once a day with a good shampoo. |
