- Traditional liver tonic - Enhanced liver cells defence against toxins and free radicals - Standardised to scientific standards Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) is a stout plant that flowered once or twice a year originated from southern and western Europe. It is one of the best researched western medical herbs. It has been used traditionally for centuries in Europe as a liver tonic. Recent scientific methods allowed the isolation of different parts of which its Silymarin content (making up of Silibin (most potent), Silidianin, Silichristine) is found to exert the highest biological activity. Milk Thistle's ability to prevent liver destruction and enhanced liver function is due largely to silymarin's inhibition of liver-damaging factor combined with its ability to stimulate the groth of new liver cells to replace old damaged cells. For example Silymarin is a powerful liver specific antioxidant that can neutralise free radical toxins before they can damage the liver. Silymarin is also found to reduce inflammation and inhibit leukotriene formation which damaged the liver cells. Milk thistle is also found to increase liver cell's protein synthesis to produce new liver cells. Silymarin also increase the solubility of bile to prevent and treat gallstones. Based on these benefits, Milk Thistle supplementation is very popular with people who regularly eat heavily (especially high fat diet), are frequently exposed to drugs (for example steroids and other liver toxic substances) and alcohols which all are very taxing on the liver. A standard dose of Silymarin is 70-210mg three times daily at regular interval. Silymarin is widely used in Europe for centuries with a lack of toxicity, further confirmed by extensive animals toxicity tests. Scientific References 1. Curr Med Chem. 2006;13(9):1055-74.
