Valerian is a plant native to North America and Europe. Its
roots are used medically. Valerian roots demonstrates a
number of pharmacological effects, including
normalization of the central nervous system (as an
adaptogen, a sedative in states of agitation and a
stimulant in cases of extreme fatigue), lowering of blood
pressure, enhancement of the flow of bile, relaxation of
intestinal musclesa , antitumor and antibiotic activity.
Valerian should be taken 30-45mins before retiring. 2g (4
caps) is needed per dose to give good effect. Both
compounds in Valerian, namely valepotriates and valeric
acids are capable of binding to same brain receptors as
many mental drugs. However, it did not appear to have
sides effects like impaired brain function, morning
hangover and dependency.

increase ghrelin levels and increased hunger and appetite
Valerian should be taken with meals to maximise
absorption of the active ingredients in them.
